Description: This interactive class will provide a background in cultural competence and outreach skills as librarians make outreach efforts to under served and minority populations in their community. The goal of this course is to offer concrete ideas to enable librarians to initiate outreach programs with minority communities. Topics to be covered include locating community demographics, the importance of developing relationships, the basics of building and developing community-based partnerships, recognition and acceptance of cultural differences, and the importance of cultural competency. Some basic concepts of program planning and evaluation within a culturally diverse environment will be covered. Participants will engage in group discussions to explore models for developing their own programs. **This course was evaluated at MLA '09 and scored an overall course grade of 3.857 on a 4.0 scale. The mean score for all evaluated courses taught at MLA ’09 was 3.792 on a 4.0 scale.

Need for This Course: The original designer of the CE, Gale Dutcher, was approached by the MLA South Central Chapter to create this class to present at their annual meeting. The class was maintained by Michelle Eberle, NN/LM NER, before she left the Network in 2016.

The instructional methods used include Slides, Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming, Sharing/Self-disclosure, and Hands-on Exercises.

Participant Materials: Barnga: A deck of playing cards for each 4-5 participants (to play Barnga - a game that deepens and understanding of not understanding the rules,)markers, butcher block paper, post it notes, fun stuff, flip charts - for cafe to go discussion Booklets on Outreach and evaluation from the NN/LM OERC Diversity Bingo: bingo cards

Facility Requirements: The room should be set up in tables with 4-5 seated at each table or have the flexibility for participants to break into groups of 4 - 5. Also needed is a computer, projector and screen.
