Description: The Community Health Education Center (CHEC) is a library for patients and their family members located at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health. The workshop emphasizes the skills needed to provide patrons with accurate health information. Librarians will learn how to communicate effectively with patrons, conduct a medical reference interview, critically evaluate online health information, and learn how to find reliable health information in a variety of formats and reading levels to meet the needs of low-literacy and speakers of other languages. Participants will be given tours of the Community Health Education Center and the Linen Powell Cancer Resource Library. Hands-on activities and discussion sessions will allow participants to gain a better understanding of providing information to patients and their families in a hospital setting.

Need for This Course: This course provides new information about the provision of consumer health and provides attendees with the ability to visit a consumer health library. The focus on patient and patient family is provided since the library is located inside a hospital building.

The instructional methods used include Lecture, Demonstration, Slides, Discussion, Brainstorming, Sharing/Self-disclosure, Role Playing, and Hands-on Exercises.
